Anyone who wants to seriously assess the technical condition of a vehicle should not only rely on noise, driving behavior or the visible impression. Especially in the engine, in the gearbox and in the differential, relevant information often first arises where it is not visible from the outside: in the oil. KUKUK therefore introduces oil and lubricant analyses as a fixed component in order to better classify the condition of these units.

The short answer is therefore: An oil analysis is often useful because it provides indications of wear, contamination and technical developments that are not yet clearly visible from the outside.

Why Oil Reveals More Than First Impressions

Oil is not just lubricant. It also carries information. During operation, it absorbs traces from the system, such as wear particles, water, fuel input or changes in viscosity. In the correct evaluation, this does not create a gut feeling, but a more resilient technical classification. Why OELCHECK and not a simple quick test?

OELCHECK describes the DIY spot test itself only as a fast, but rough orientation. The company explicitly writes that a DIY spot test cannot replace a comprehensive laboratory analysis and in some cases even misleads. In its own comparative examples, a rapid test showed that a Ferrari-Daytona gear oil could be used "unrestrictedly", although the laboratory analysis already provided clear indications of increased wear and suspicion of water. Other samples also failed to identify important issues such as engine wear or oil ageing.

The crucial point is not only that in the laboratory is measured, but how. OELCHECK does not evaluate the laboratory spot test for engine oils in isolation, but always together with additional measured values via 30. This is the main difference between a rough visual inspection and a more robust technical analysis.

What a Good Oil Analysis Should Do

A meaningful oil analysis should not only provide a traffic light result. It should help to better answer four questions:

1. Are there any indications of wear?

Wear metals can be an indication of material removal in the system. The decisive factor here is not only whether a single value is high, but also whether the overall picture is plausible and how the values develop in the course. OELCHECK emphasizes in the laboratory reports themselves the importance of trend behavior.

2. Is there evidence of contamination?

Water, fuel or other contaminants can provide important technical information. They do not in themselves prove the exact cause, but they can be a warning sign that warrants further observation or examination. This cautious logic also corresponds to KUKUK’s guardrails: observation, interpretation and conclusion must remain neatly separated.

3. Does the oil remain in the expected range?

Viscosity, additive image and other state values help to better understand the behavior of the lubricant under real conditions. A value that is still formally in the specification can also be worth observing if it changes or does not fit the overall picture. This is exactly what this transmission report says.

4. Is a trend visible?

The most important rule is often: Trend beats individual sample. A single analysis is useful. Several analyses make developments visible. In both available Alfa reports, OELCHECK explicitly recommends sending the next sample to monitor trend behavior.

Practical example: Alfa Romeo

A good example of this is provided by the attached analyses of a Alfa Romeo. The samples were taken on 5 February 2026 and examined on 9 February 2026. Separate reports are available for engine and manual transmission.

Engine

The engine report states that the wear values are within the normal range. At the same time, the fuel content has increased slightly. The trend shows a slight increase, and OELCHECK recommends observing the further change with the next analysis. In the given pre-values, the petrol is currently 1,5 %; earlier values were 1,4 %, 1,2 %, 1,5 %, 1,0 % and 1,6 %. Water is also indicated as below 0,10 %.

Important here: The report does not describe acute damage. However, it shows a signal that should be observed further in the trend. This is exactly why a serious oil analysis is valuable.

Gearbox

In the transmission report, the wear values are also within the normal range. At the same time, the water content is at the limit, specifically at 1192 ppm according to Karl Fischer. The viscosity is described as somewhat lower than expected, but still within the valid limits for the specified oil type. Here, too, the clear recommendation is to send the next sample for trend monitoring.

Again, not dramatic. But technically relevant.

What can be learned from the Alfa case

The practical added value is not that the report “reveals” spectacular damage. The added value is that it makes early signals visible without overstretching them.

In the Alfa case we see exactly that

In the engine no acute wear alarm, but a slightly increased fuel content, which should be observed.

In the transmission no acute wear warning, but water at the limit and a viscosity that is not quite expected.

That is the difference between a rough reassurance and a clean technical classification.

What to Look For Specifically

Anyone who wants to use an oil analysis sensibly should pay attention to these points

Trend before single

A unique value can be useful. A course is clearly more meaningful. Therefore, samples should be made comparable and repeated. This is recommended in the Alfa reports themselves as the next step.

Evaluate aggregates separately

Motor, transmission and differential are technically different systems. A blanket statement about “the vehicle” helps little. KUKUK explicitly names the oil analysis for these aggregates separately.

Do not minimize water and fuel

Even if no acute defect is confirmed, water or fuel inputs can be relevant indications. They should not be read as a side issue.

Don’t just look at “normal” or “unnormal”

A report can be formally reassuring and yet give rise to observation. This is exactly what the Alfa reports show.

Always read results in context

Vehicle, use, oil type, change interval and trend belong together. OELCHECK itself emphasizes that the spot test alone is not enough and results must always be read in the interaction of many values.

In the engine, the fuel content has increased slightly. In the gearbox, water is at the limit, the viscosity is slightly lower than expected. Both justifies further observation.

And this is precisely where the added value lies: not fast security, but better classification.

Is a DIY oil test enough for a serious assessment? OELCHECK describes DIY spot tests themselves only as a rough orientation. They cannot replace laboratory analysis.
